Hey guys, I'm Zach Sikes. I'm a sponsoring broker, a managing broker here in Oklahoma, and we hire a lot of new agents. So we always get this question, we get this question all the time: "Hey, what do I do? How do I get started? How do I go get that license? And what does all that look like?" So I wanted to share a little bit with you on where to start and how to get started.

There are a couple of things you need to know. First off, there are the state requirements and the realtor board requirements, and also requirements for MLS access and things like that. So I’m going to walk through some of those steps for you. The first step is to go ahead and outline your plan for getting that license. You can go to https://oklahoma.gov/orec.html, which will bring up the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission. Now, there are several types of licenses, and it's really important to understand which one applies to you. If you’ve never been licensed before, you’ll want to choose the provisional sales associate license. After your first year, you're eligible to become a full sales associate. After being licensed for three or four years, and completing enough transactions, you can go back, take additional education and testing, and qualify to be a broker, branch broker, or managing broker.

That’s the highest license, and that’s the one I hold. It allows me to sponsor other agents. So, if you want to get your real estate license, one of the requirements is to choose the Provisional Sales Associate. That’s where you'll start if you’re a brand new licensee. What does it take? Well, the first thing you need to do is take a 90-hour class. This is a 90-classroom-hour course, not a college credit course. It typically takes about two weeks to complete. You can do this online or in-person, depending on what works best for you. If you’d like, click below to get a discount code for one of our preferred online classes. They’re self-paced, so you can go at your own speed.

Once you finish the 90-hour course, your next step is to complete a background check. This is necessary because you’ll be entering people’s homes, so it’s important to ensure you're trustworthy. Once your background check is completed, you can apply for the sales associate license. As part of the application, you'll need to pass both the state and national tests. Once you pass those, you’re eligible for your real estate license.

The final step before you can officially begin working is to find a sponsoring broker. That’s where I come in. I sponsor agents who I believe are a good fit for our culture and help them get started in the industry.

Your first step, again, is to start the real estate process. I'll include a link below where you can get our discount code. Once you’re there, choose the state you’re in, then look for the Provisional Sales Associate pre-licensing class. You’ll have several options for the course, including standard packages with exam prep or a pass guarantee. If you're already working with a broker who has training built in, you might not need to worry about the additional development programs. The premium package, which includes post-licensing education, is required to become a full sales associate after your first year, so consider that if you're looking for a more comprehensive package.

Once you’ve picked your course, start taking it at your own pace. After you’ve completed the course and passed your exams, begin interviewing brokers to find the best fit for you. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. I'm always happy to be a resource!
